Valentin Clastrier

Valentin Clastrier ( * 1947 in Nice ) is a French improvising musician, he plays electro-acoustic hurdy-gurdy Alto and lives in Ennordres in the department of Cher.

Life and work

Valentin Clastrier played 1968 - 1969 in the musical Man of La Mancha (L' Homme de la Mancha ), with Jacques Brel in the title role, as well as around 1970 several years together with the French singer and music comedian Ricet Barrier.

The musician with classical training on trumpet will change to 1970 on the hurdy-gurdy. He approached the instrument without taking the route via which usually associated in France with the hurdy-gurdy traditional repertoire. In 1987 he is "the other hurdy-gurdy player "; together with the instrument maker Denis Siorat he is working on a significant development of the hurdy-gurdy. Since 2006 Clastrier works with Wolfgang Weichselbaumer on a new prototype. The new instrument opens up new possibilities in sound dynamics and technique especially in the acoustic range.

His early music is of Asian influences dominated (La vielle à roue de l' imaginaire, 1982 - " Grand prix du disque " the Académie Charles -Cros ) and is evolving to more experimental sounds ( Hérésie, 1992). This Clastrier mainly combines the technique of the hurdy-gurdy with elements of jazz.

In his book La vielle & l' univers de l' infinie roue - archet, he develops a new perspective on the hurdy-gurdy, he describes his technique of the keyboard and the stroke or the right hand, as well as a writing system for the complete notation. These "non - methodical method" is the result of many years of development, while the Clastrier developed in contact with contemporary music (such as Olivier Messiaen ) a new practice of the instrument.

Valentin Clastrier is today thanks to his virtuosity and play technical innovations as the undisputed master of the instrument, he is since 1984 the carrier conferred by the French Ministry of Culture Order of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
