Monastery Varennes

The monastery Vauluisant ( Vallis lucens ), not to be confused with Abbey Le Bouschet - Vauluisant, is a former Cistercian abbey in the village of Courgenay in the Yonne department, Bourgogne region, France. It is located around 25 km north-east of Sens in the valley of the brook Alain, an influx of Vanne, in the border area of the Pays d' Othe.

History

The monastery was settled in 1127 by a founding convention of Kloster Preuilly and thus belonged to the filiation of the monastery of Citeaux. It founded in 1149, the daughter monastery Varennes. Gran Gien was founded in Beauvais, Toucheboeuf, Livannes, Cerilly, Loges, Bernières, Beaulieu, Beauregard and Armentieres. The abbey, which processed iron and quarries operational, maintained town houses in Troyes (the " Hôtel de Vauluisant ", the History Museum ) and in Provins. 1636 Cistercians of the Strict Observance ( Trappists ) came to the monastery. That in its history several times plundered and ravaged the monastery was dissolved during the French Revolution and discontinued after 1792 and 1835 transformed by the banker Léopold Javal into a model farm. The gardens were expanded. Since 1982 the "Festival de Vauluisant " is organized. The plant is classed as a " Monument historique ".

Buildings and plant

From the 1144 consecrated and remodeled in the 13th and 14th centuries, with three naves and six longhouse Jochen, a transept with three rectangular chapels on both sides and a choir with 7/12-Schluss which was canceled well before 1840, nothing is received as well of the convent buildings. But are preserved the entrance gate from the 16th century with two lateral round towers with conical roofs, the guesthouse and the strangers chapel, the house of King Francis I, a restored 16th century tithe barn, the octagonal dovecote and the mill. The " Château " is the conversion of Konversenflügels; it contains a monumental staircase from the 18th century. In the church of Courgenay there are three altars from the monastery, in Villeneuve- l'Archevêque a burial of the Master of chaource from 1528.
