Veleda

Veleda was a Germanic prophetess of the tribe of Bructeri who flourished about 70 AD at the time of Vespasian and was later spent as prisoners to Ardea in Italy. Veleda was, according to Tacitus ( Hist., IV, 61, 65), a Germanic prophetess of the tribe of Bructeri. The name is both the Latin and Greek writers Tacitus (Hist. 4,61,2; 4,65,3.4 hist, hist 5,22,3, 5,24,1 hist; Germanic 8.2 ) Veleda in the spelling, velaeda, Statius ( silv. 1,4,90 ) as Veleda and Cassius Dio ( 67,5,3 ) as οὐλήδαν ( mss also βελήδαν ), as well as inscriptions ( ardeatinische inscription, 2nd century n. Chr: Βεληδαν ... μακρῆς περὶ παρθέν [ ... ] ἣν οἳ Ῥηνοπόται σέβουσιν, Veleda ... testified about the long virgin ( ... ), adore the Rhine water drinkers ') as Βεληδαν.
