Vicosoprano

Vicosoprano ( German: Vespran, Romansh Visavraun ) was a municipality in the district of Maloja in the Swiss Bergell in the canton of Grisons. The name comes from Vicus supranus ( = Upper Village ). Through the village flows the Maira.

On 1 January 2010 the municipalities merged the Bergells Bondo, Castasegna, Soglio, Stampa and Vicosoprano the new community Bregaglia.

Coat of arms

Description: Shared by silver ( white ), and black, in an upright silver black, red reinforced Capricorn, in black a silver two-towered castle battlements with gate. After an older coat of arms simplified.

The coat of arms merged with Vicosoprano community Casaccia showed: In a fallen Black silver (white ) rafters, surmounted by a silver horseshoe. At the crossroads between Septimer and Maloja refers the fallen rafters; route for traders over the passes is the horseshoe. The colors are those of the church covenant.

In the three districts Vicosopranos the Reformation 1529-1553 was introduced in the formerly independent municipality Casaccia 1551st

Nationality

From the end of 2005 453 inhabitants were 420 Swiss nationals.

History

Vicosoprano been inhabited since the early Middle Ages. The name first appears in 1096 in the Latin form vicus supranus. The town is the capital of the valley Bergell and therefore was the seat of a bailiff. 1971 merged the village Casaccia about 6 km further north with Vicosoprano.

Economy

The jobs come from agriculture and forestry, trade and industry and the service sector and hospitality industry. In the village there are two hotels available. Stands above the village on the right bank of the Mera, the campsite « Mulina ".

In the district Löbbia are a power plant and a substation of the power station of Zurich ( EWZ ) city. The EWZ supplied alongside Zurich the Grisons valleys, where a significant portion of the electricity is produced.

Vicosoprano is served by bus from the Engadine 4; Concessionaire is the Swiss postal bus service.

Attractions

  • The churches are under cantonal conservation. Reformed main church is S. Trinità, much older San Cassiano. Regular services are held in the Reformed Church Casaccia.

  • In the center is the round Senvelenturm from the 13th century, which is installed in the Town Hall. On the outside wall is still the pillory block to see the necklace.
  • At the western edge of the village Vicosopranos is the " Salis tower ", a six-story residential tower. It dates from the 13th or 14th century and was rebuilt in 1580 for Rudolf von Salis. The windows were installed in the 16th and 18th centuries, further modifications were made in 1821.
