Victor Lange
Victor Lange ( born July 13, 1908 in Markranstadt, † June 29, 1996 in Princeton, full name Victor Hermann Walter Lange ) was a German -American and German studies Anglist.
Life
Lange was born the son of a lawyer. He learned from 1919 to 1928 at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. He studied English at the University of Oxford, with Paul Joachim 's son, Wilhelm Pinder and Karl Vossler at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich, Walter Goetz, Hermann August Korff, Theodor Litt and Joachim guard at the University of Leipzig and at the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1930 to 1931 he studied as Gertrude Davis Fellow at the University of Toronto and received his doctorate in 1934 with a thesis on The lyrical anthology in England in the 18th century ( 1670-1780 ) at Levin Ludwig Schücking at the University of Leipzig Dr. phil.
He then taught in Toronto, starting in 1938 at Cornell University, and 1945-1946 at Smith College. In 1942 he became an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1944 and a U.S. citizen. From 1957 he worked at Princeton University. Until 1977 he was John N. Woodhull Professor of Modern Languages ibid. Since 1934 he was a member of the Modern Language Association and from 1957 the German Schiller Society. 1950 and 1967 he was a Guggenheim fellow in 1962 and an honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin. In 1959 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Bundeskrepublik Germany. In 1965 he was awarded the Goethe Medal in Frankfurt and in 1966 Friedrich Gundolf Prize of the German Academy for Language and Poetry, which he was a member since 1957. In 1985, he received the Chancellor's Citation of the University of California and in 1993 the Golden Goethe Medal of the Goethe Society in Weimar. In 1966 he organized the German -language writers' meetings of Group 47 and 1970, the International Association for Germanic linguistics and literature, which he was president, in Princeton. From 1980 to 1989 he was founding president of the Goethe Society of North America. He was also a member of the club P.E.N.
