Video game genres

As with all types of entertainment media genres are used to used to categorize video games. The genre is in the way of gameplay challenges. A classification into a specific genre is only possible in many games, often as elements of various genres are mixed. This leads to an extended division (some with sub-genres ). However, there is no scientifically recognized classification here. It is therefore preferred to respond to individual features of the game, rather than to force a play in a certain genre.

Theory of computer game genre

Stronger than other media genres of computer games are determined by the technical possibilities and limitations. Because the reality can not be replicate one on one in a computer game, the realizable aspect must first be accurately determined and are then highly abstracted, because it can be simulated only the very special aspects that are perceived to play a joke as elementary.

So the tennis game in the game Pong than two bars ( Bat ) was in the early days of computer games, realized that in a seemingly empty room a small box - due to the low resolution no circle was possible - reflected. Despite the immense abstraction, the basic idea of a tennis game or general ball game was clearly evident.

The progressive improvement of the hardware permits, however, continues to lower the level of abstraction. This also has consequences for the game genres. A computer game can be realized by its level of detail today several formerly separated genres simultaneously. This allows the player, for example, the choice between an action packed or more furtive playing style, rather than confined to a single simulated play.

History of computer game genre

In the early days of two-dimensional computer games dominated mainly games from the side view. Shoot ' em ups, side-scroller and Jump' n ' runs were the most popular genres. In the late 80s, increasingly could also role play and adventure to celebrate their successes. In particular, the games from Lucasarts were at this time as flagship products.

Mid-1990 began the transition from 2D to real 3D graphics. In charge was primarily the new first-person shooter genre that was practically due mainly to the games Wolfenstein 3D and Doom single-handedly by id Software in this change. Equally successful was at this time only the immense real-time strategy games boom, which began with the success of Command & Conquer by Westwood. Games of this type dissolved the hitherto dominant due to their simpler technical feasibility of turn-based strategy games to the mass market almost completely off by responding a new aktionsorientiertere target group.

Today games are increasingly exhibit a trend towards so-called genre mixing. This is both technically ( see Theory ), as well as established market economy in order to obtain the target group of several genre followers simultaneously.

For example, used Diablo characteristics of classic role-playing games (such as the improvement of the character played by collecting objects ), but has a much higher proportion of action.
