Vincent Canby

Vincent Canby ( born July 27, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois; † 15 September 2000 in New York City ) was an American film critic.

Canby worked as a film reporter for Variety, before he was hired in 1965 at the New York Times. From 1969 to 1993 he was Head of Film Critics of the New York Times and was regarded at that time as one of the most important film critic in the country. As of 1993, Canby was mainly interested in theater reviews.

Vincent Canby was never married, but several years in a relationship with the author Penelope Gilliatt. On September 15, 2000 Canby died after cancer.
