Viscount Gage

Viscount Gage, of Castle Iceland in the County of Kerry of the Kingdom of Ireland, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Ireland, which is run by the family fee.

Ancestral home of the family is Firle Place in Firle, East Sussex.

Award

The title was for Sir Thomas Gage, 8th Baronet, created in 1720. This was an important supporter of the British during the pacification of Ireland. In the following years he was for many years a member of the House of Commons, as the Irish title was not automatically connected to a seat in the House of Lords.

Subordinate title

Simultaneously with the Viscountcy the title of Baron Gage, of Castlebar in the County of Mayo, was awarded, which also belongs to the peerage of Ireland.

The second Viscount was a major troop commander. He was raised in 1790 for Baron Gage of High Meadow. This title, which belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain was provided with a special note that he could pass on brothers of the first honoree and paternal substitute to other male descendants of his grandfather because the Viscount had no sons. Both baronies are now run as the subordinate title of Viscountcy.

More titles

The aforementioned second Viscount was already in 1780 erhobern Baron Gage in the Peerage of Great Britain. This title, which had no particular successor clause expired with his death in 1791.

An ancestor of the first Viscount was already in 1622 a baronet, of Firle Place, appointed. This dignity belongs to the Baronetage of England.
