Visokoi Island

Visokoi Iceland is an uninhabited volcanic island located in the southern Atlantic Ocean British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

The island is located approximately 370 km southeast of the main island of South Georgia and about 300 km northeast of the Antarctic, in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands, and together with Zavodovski Iceland and Iceland Leskov the small group of Traversayinseln whose southernmost Visokoi is.

The 8 × 6 km wide island with a land area of ​​about 34.5 sq km area is basically just a 1005 -meter-high stratovolcano, Mount Hodson, 1830 and 1930 which showed recent activity.

Discovered and named was Visokoi Iceland in 1819 by the German Baltic Antarctica sailors Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. This named the island after a Russian term for height, because of the impressed survey of the volcanic mountain. The name of the volcano goes to Sir Arnold Hodson Weinholt, a governor of the Falkland Islands back.
