Vladimir Vasin

Vladimir Alexeyevich Vasin (Russian: Владимир Алексеевич Васин; born January 9, 1947 in Moscow) is a former Soviet diver and later a sports official. He became in 1972 the first Soviet Olympic Champion in the water jump.

Vasin participated in three Olympic Games, the first time at the age of 17 years in 1964 in Tokyo, where he reached the finals of the 3 -meter board and was eighth. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City Vasin went to the art and diving. He reached the finals in both competitions, the 3 -meter board, he finished in eleventh place, from the 10 m tower tenth. At the European Championships 1970 in Barcelona Vasin won his first international medal, from the 3 -meter board, he won the bronze medal. The highlight of his career experienced Vasin at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. From the 3 -meter board, he surprisingly won against Franco and Craig Lincoln Cagnotto the gold medal, thus becoming the first Soviet Olympic Champion in the water jump. Vasin, thus ending the dominance of U.S. athletes in diving, the undefeated were previously over 50 years in the Olympic competition, the 3- m board. After this success, Vasin started only once in international championships. At the World Championships 1973 in Belgrade, he achieved his best World Cup placing sixth in the 3 -meter board. Vasin won between 1969 and 1972 three titles at the national championships. In 1991 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the water jumping.

After his playing career, Vasin committed first at the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA ), where he was Chairman of the Technical Commission. From 1989 to 1992 he was president of the All-Russian National Olympic Committee, since 2005 he is Vice President of Olimpijski komitet Rossii. Between 2006 and 2010 he was also at three Olympic Games Head of the Russian delegation.

Vasin graduated from the Lomonosov University in Moscow a degree in economics.
