Von Freeman

Earl Lavon " from" Freeman Sr. ( born October 3, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois; † August 11, 2012 ) was an American jazz musician (tenor saxophone, composition).

Life

Freeman, the son of a policeman and amateur trumpeter, who was friends with Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines learned piano as a child, clarinet and saxophone and attended DuSable High School, where he was in under the guidance of Captain Walter Dyett together with Gene Ammons ensemble was formed in a band. After playing a year in Horace Henderson's Orchestra, he was during his military service from 1941 to 1945 member of the U.S. Navy Hellcats, a band of American Navy.

Different band leader like King Kolax, Billy Eckstine, and later Miles Davis could not convince him to go on tour. Instead, he stayed in Chicago and was there until 1950, the house band of Chicago's Pershing Ballroom; short time he worked 1948/49, with Sun Ra. Then he formed a band with his brothers George and Bruce Freeman and Ahmad Jamal, who in 1951 replaced by Andrew Hill. In 1956 he accompanied with Andrew Hill and Malachi Favors doo-wop lineup De'bonairs for the label ping. In the 1960s he was active in the blues scene took with Milt Trenier on, he was in the band from 1966 to 1969, but also worked with Jimmy Reed, Otis Rush and Gene Chandler. Then he turned back to jazz and has appeared with Dexter Gordon. His first album under his own name Doin ' It Right Now was formed in 1972 on the initiative of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who also produced the record. In 1982, he played with his son Chico Freeman and Ellis Marsalis Wynton and Branford with his sons Album Fathers & Sons a. In the 1990s and 2000s he recorded several albums for the label Steeplechase, Delmark, Nessa and Premonition.
