Walter Szczerbiak

Walter Szczerbiak ( born August 21, 1949 in Hamburg ) is a former American professional basketball player. His preferred position was that of a small forward. Due to his successful career in Europe, particularly during his time at Real Madrid, he is led by the Euro League as one of the 50 most important figures of European basketball.

Career

Walter Szczerbiak started his career in the George Washington University, for their basketball team, the Colonials, he played over four seasons. In 1971, he joined the American Basketball Association for the Pittsburgh Condors. After one season, his team broke up and he went into the EPBL (Today CBA) to the Wilkes-Barre Barons, with which he could win the title 1972/73, Szczerbiak itself contributed 24.6 points and 12.4 rebounds per game with. He then got a one-year contract offer from the NBA team Buffalo Braves, but this declined to go to Spain to Real Madrid. The Brussels residents, he became one of the most important players. He won three times the European Champions Cup, where he was appointed in the final game in 1978, with 25 points scored most valuable player. With Real Madrid he also won four championships in a row ( 1973/74-1976/77 ). The offensive specialist Walter Szczerbiak, however, was used only in the European Cup during his last three years with the Spaniards ( 1977/78-1979/80 ) of coach Lolo Sainz. Finally in 1980 moved Szczerbiak in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A, Tropic Udine, where he spent two season. After another year in Spain, at CB Canarias, he finished his career in 1984.

Since 1986, Walter Szczerbiak works as a representative of the ACB league in the United States, where he has participated in numerous American player transfers to Spain.

Trivia

His son Wally Szczerbiak was also a basketball player. From 1999 to 2009 he played in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
