Wat Mahathat

Wat Mahathat ( Thai: วัด มหาธาตุ ) is the abbreviation of several important Buddhist temples ( Wat ) in Thailand. The name means Temple of the Great Relic, because these temples all have a relic of the Buddha. Although there are several Wat Mahathat in Thailand, but the full name is distinctive.

Similar short name of Thai temples that can occur more than once are Wat Phra That (Temple of the Holy relic, such as Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong) and Wat Phra Putthabat (Temple of the footprint of the Buddha, for example, in Saraburi ).
