Weitnau is a market in the Swabian district Oberallgaeu and office of the Management Community Weitnau.

Geography

Weitnau lies in the Allgäu region in the foothills of the Alps. The municipality consists of the districts Weitnau, Rechtis, Waltrams and Wengen. To Weitnau beyond include the places Hellengerst, Mayrhofen, small hamlet, Seltmans and Sibratshofen.

History

Weitnau was reportedly first mentioned in 726 as Witunavia. Secured is the first mention in 1250 as Witenowe.
