Wendy Smith-Sly

Wendy Sly (born Smith, born November 5, 1959 in London) is a former British middle and long distance runner.

She celebrated her first international success by winning the silver medal in the 3000 - meter race at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 in Brisbane. At the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki it was about 1500 m and 3000 m respectively Fifth. On both routes them scoring personal bests.

The highlight of her career reached Sly at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In the 3000 - meter race she won in 8:39,47 min the silver medal behind the Romanian Maricica Puica ( 8:35,96 min ) and before the Canadian Lynn Williams ( 8:42,14 min). The race was the audience mainly remembered for the overthrow of the US-American favorite Mary Decker after a collision with Zola Budd.

At the World Athletics Championships 1987 in Rome Sly took eighth place in the 3000 -meter run. About the same distance she won at the Indoor Athletics European Championships in Budapest in 1988 and reached the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul in seventh. They also won in 1988 at Zurich New Year's run. In 1991 she finished her performance athletic career.

Wendy Sly is 1,68 m tall and weighed about 52 kg competition times. She started for the Borough of Hounslow Athletics Club and the Brooks Racing Team.
