Western Bulldogs

The Western Bulldogs are an Australian football team from Melbourne, the currently playing in the AFL, the top division. Its official name is Footscray Football Club. The club plays at the Etihad Stadium, which holds 56,000 spectators. The club colors are blue, red and white.

History

The club was founded in 1873 as Footscray Football Club. Two years later they moved into the long-standing stadium of the club, the Whitten Oval. Overall Bulldogs were able to win the championship of the Victoria Football Association, the forerunner of the AFL, nine times. The first championship was won in 1898. This success could be repeated in the two subsequent years. 1908 and 1913 followed the next championships. Between 1915 and 1917 the matches due to the First World War has been discontinued. After the war was initially to build on the successes of four championships between 1919 and 1924. Thereafter, however, the team remained long without success, reaching only a few times the finals, but it was not long be won. In 1954 the Bulldogs were the Melbourne Football Club in the final of the meanwhile in Victoria Football League ( VFL) renamed to defeat Championship with 102:51 and thus celebrated the last major success of the club's history. The present name Western Bulldogs Football Club was the club in 1997.
