Westmalle Brewery

The Westmalle Trappist beer is brewed in the brewery in the Trappist abbey of Westmalle in Malle Belgium ( province of Antwerp ).

Besides Westmalle Trappist beers only five more may carry the proprietary label Authentic Trappist Product in Belgium: Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort and Westvleteren; and La Trappe in the Netherlands and since 2012 Engelszell in Austria.

History

The Abbey of Westmalle was founded in 1794 and was awarded the status of a Trappist abbey on April 22, 1836. Martinus Dom, the first abbot, made ​​the decision to brew your own beer. The first serving on December 10 of the same year. The local sales began in 1856, since 1921 finds the beer also commercially available.

Since 1856 also dark beer is brewed in Westmalle Dubbel but the current is inspired by a recipe from 1926.

Developed in 1934, the brewery, the first triple beer, this is now regarded as an outstanding example of this type of beer.

In 1991, the brewery was modernized. The current annual production is about 120,000 hectoliters and the filling capacity is 45,000 bottles per hour ( 2001).

  • Triple ( 9.5% Alc Vol. )
  • Extra ( 4.8% Alc Vol. ) Is brewed only twice a year and is exclusively reserved for the monks and their guests.
