Wiesentfels Ebermannstadt

The Wiesentfels is a right and eastern tributary of the Regnitz. It is the main river of the Franconian Switzerland with 78 km length.

Origin of the name

The name is derived from the Old High German Wiesentfels the name Wisantaha ago, made up of Wisant ( bison ) and Aha (water) composed and literally " water where bison live " means.

Geography

Wiesentfels source

The Wiesentfels source is located in the west of Steinfeld, in the municipality of Stadelhofen. There is a broader karst spring between the houses of the village, which springs in the Franconian Jura Riffdolomit. The source may have an enormous bed after heavy rain. The source is identified by the Bavarian State Office for Environment as Geotop 471Q001. See also the list of geological sites in the district of Bamberg.

A planned highway parking at about two kilometers north-trending cross A 70 will bear the name Wiesentfels source.

River

The Wiesentfels first flows to the southeast, taking in Behringersmühle the Püttlach on and bends to the west. A few hundred meters downstream of it is the Stempfermühlquelle (550 l / s) increased. In Forchheim Wiesentfels opens into the Regnitz. Particularly worth seeing is the Wiesenttal in the same community.

Recreation

The Wiesentfels offers the only still allowed river hiking trip through the Franconian Switzerland and is very popular with canoe riders.

According to a new law of the Government of Upper Franconia canoeing from 2006 to the Wiesentfels is allowed only limited, raft rides are generally prohibited:

  • From 1 October to 30 April, the paddling is prohibited between Plank rock and Gasseldorf.
  • From May 1 to September 30 may be driven to 18 clock the Wiesentfels Plankenfels to Sachsen mill 9-17 clock and of the Saxon Mill to Gasseldorf of 9.
  • The upper course is to Plankenfels locked throughout the year.
  • May be paddled only in the flow direction.
  • Getting in and out is permitted only at designated locations.
  • All events organized boat with more than ten boats are prohibited, exceptions must be approved.
  • The local boatman may use only a prescribed number of rental boats that are marked accordingly.
