Wilhelm von Roggendorf

Wilhelm Freiherr von Roggendorfstraße (* 1481, † August 1541 in Šamorín ) was an Austrian STEWARD. He was a son of Kaspar Rye village and thus came from the original Styrian knight family of rye village, which was called since the mid-15th century in Austria below the Enns, such as Lower Austria at that time was a resident. He was one of the commanders in the first Austrian war against the Turks.

Life

William of Roe Dorff appeared in 1491 in the service of the Habsburgs. From 1517 to 1520 he served as governor of Friesland. In the second half of the 1520s he was steward of Archduke Ferdinand. He also commanded under his brother Niklas Graf Salm (1459-1530) during the Turkish siege of 1529 the heavy cavalry. The following year he was appointed Lord High Steward, and scored in the following years the most influential politicians in the vicinity of King Ferdinand I. Often he represented Bernard of Cles. In 1539, he resigned his office, but was soon called out to the commander of the armed forces, the 1541 conquest of Buda ( German stove) was sent. During the Habsburgs disastrous siege of the Turkish fortress of Buda, he suffered a wound, escaped to the island of bulk, but died a few days later in Sommerein ( Šamorín ) his injuries.

Reception

By the imperial resolution of Franz Joseph I of February 28, 1863 William of Rye village was " famous, to the everlasting emulation worthy warlords and generals of Austria" in the list of added, in whose honor and remembrance also a life-size statue in the Feldherrenhalle of the then newly constructed kk Hofwaffenmuseums (now the Military History Museum Vienna) was built. The statue was created in 1871 by sculptor Rudolf Dominik Zafauk Carrara marble, it was dedicated by Emperor Franz Joseph himself

In 1894 in Vienna Hernals ( 17th district ) was named Roggendorfstraße alley after him.
