William Bowie Medal

The William Bowie Medal is a geoscientific price and represents the highest award, which is awarded by the American Geophysical Union ( AGU).

The usually short termed Bowie Medal Medal is awarded annually. With the award honors scientists for outstanding contributions to fundamental geophysics and unselfish cooperation in research. The latter is one of the defining themes of the AGU.

Was introduced the medal in 1939 at the initiative of the then ( eighth ) AGU President Richard Field in honor of William Bowie ( 1872-1940 ), the first presidents of AGU 1919 until 1921. This was 1939, the same time the first prize winner.
