William Henry Hunt (judge)

William Henry Hunt ( born November 5, 1857 in New Orleans, Louisiana; † February 4, 1949 in Charlottesville, Virginia) was an American lawyer and politician. From 1901 to 1904 he served as Governor of Puerto Rico; then he became a federal judge.

Career

After studying law and qualifying as a lawyer William Hunt practiced between 1880 and 1887 in Fort Benton in Montana Territory at that time as a lawyer. From 1881 to 1885 he was there and in Idaho Territory and tax collectors. In 1884 he participated in the Constituent Assembly of the future state of Montana as a delegate. From 1885 to 1887, he served as Attorney General in the Montana Territory. After the accession of Montana to the Union in 1889 he was a deputy in the local House of Representatives of the year. Thereafter, he served 1889-1894 Judge in the first judicial district of that State; 1894 to 1900 he was judge of the Montana Supreme Court

In 1900, Hunt was appointed by President William McKinley to the executive officers of the territorial government of Puerto Rico. This post he held until 15 September 1901. On this day he joined as a follower of Charles Herbert Allen, the Office of the Governor of Puerto Rico, which he held until July 4, 1904. During this time, Hunt Christmas and Thanksgiving as certain public holidays in its territory.

On April 14, 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt nominated him as successor of Hiram Knowles for a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Montana. Five days later he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate, after which he held this office until March 30, 1910. On that day he took over the post of a judge at the Federal Customs Court. There he remained only until January 31, 1911 after him President William Howard Taft had appointed a judge of the Federal Court of Appeals for the ninth circuit court. On 31 January 1928 he joined the senior status before he fully retired from the federal service on 30 November 1928. Between 1928 and 1942 he practiced then as a private lawyer in San Francisco. He died on 4 February 1949 in Charlottesville.
