Beekman Winthrop

Beekman Winthrop ( born September 18, 1874 in Orange, New Jersey, † November 10, 1940 ) was an American politician ( Republican) and 1904-1907 Governor of Puerto Rico.

Career

Beekman Winthrop was a descendant of John Winthrop (1588-1649), governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was, and a descendant of John Winthrop, Jr. (1606-1676), a governor of the Colony of Connecticut. His father Robert Winthrop (1833-1892) was a wealthy and influential banker in New York City. By 1900, Beekman Winthrop studied under law at Harvard University. He then became private secretary to the later U.S. President William Howard Taft, served as Governor of the Philippines. In the Philippines, he was at times also served as judges.

Winthrop was also a personal friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, who appointed him in 1904 as the successor to William Henry Hunt as the new Governor of Puerto Rico. This post he held between July 4, 1904 and April 17, 1907., Where he campaigned for local elections for government offices. In 1907, Roosevelt appointed him as Deputy Secretary of the Treasury ( Assistant Secretary of the Treasury ). This office he held until 1909. After that he was appointed by the new President Taft deputy to Secretary of the Navy George von Lengerke Meyer. A post he held as a successor to Herbert L. Satterlee until the end of Taft's term of office in March 1913.

Between 1913 and 1916 Winthrop was director of National City Bank. After that, he was director of the company Robert Winthrop and Co. He died on 10 November 1940.
