James R. Beverley

James Rumsey Beverley ( born June 15, 1894 in Amarillo, Texas, † June 17, 1967 in Austin, Texas ) was an American politician. In 1929, and again from 1932 to 1933 he was acting governor of Puerto Rico.

Career

About the youth and education of James Beverley nothing is handed down. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. In 1925 he married Mary Smith Jarmon. Between 1927 and 1932 he held the office of Attorney General in Puerto Rico. In 1929, he was appointed acting governor of this outdoor area. He bridged the time between the end of the term of office of Horace Mann Towner and the inauguration of the new governor Theodore Roosevelt Jr. In 1932 and 1933 he practiced again this office and also bridged the period after the end of the term of office of Roosevelt and the the inauguration of Robert Hayes Gore.

Beverley was 1900-1952 the only governor of Puerto Rico, who spoke Spanish with the people of this island. During his time as Governor, he had to deal with the aftermath of a hurricane. In this period also ended Prohibition. He also had to take care of political problems with the birth control. In the 1960s he moved to Austin, where he spent his twilight years.
