Wolfgang Böhmer

Wolfgang Böhmer ( born January 27, 1936 in Dürrhennersdorf, Amtshauptmannschaft Lobau ) is a German politician ( CDU), physicians, and was from 2002 to 2011 Minister President of Saxony -Anhalt.

Life and career

Wolfgang Böhmer grew up in Dürrhennersdorf on in the Saxon part of Upper Lusatia, where his parents worked as farmers. After graduation in 1954 at the Scholl -Gymnasium Lobau Bohemian studied medicine at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and received his PhD in 1959, Dr. med. His thesis is entitled The duration of ventricular extrasystoles.

From 1960 he worked as a physician at the Women's Hospital in Görlitz in 1966 and recognized as a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. In 1967 he was the first senior physician at the Women's Hospital Görlitz. Subsequently, he was from 1974 to 1991 chief physician at the hospital Paul -Gerhardt- pin in the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. In 1983 he habilitated at the Martin- Luther -University Halle -Wittenberg with the work The development of the individual and societal burden of human reproduction. During his time at Wittenberg, he worked extensively with the historical development of health and social services Wittenberg and was there co-author of four volumes of urban history research series.

Böhmer's wife, Barbara, died in 2001. The marriage went a son. In July 2005, the Bohemian married in Wittenberg his former surgical nurse Brigitte Klein.

Party

In the GDR Bohemian engaged in evangelical church circles and in 1990 a member of the CDU in the GDR. From 1998 to 2004 he was state chairman of the CDU Saxony- Anhalt.

Member of Parliament

From 1990 to 2002 and from 2005 to 2006 was a member of the Landtag of Bohemian Saxony- Anhalt and from 1998 to 2002 as Vice President, and from 2001 to 2002 Chairman of the CDU parliamentary group. Public offices

Bohemian belonged from 1991 to 1993 as Minister of Finance of the run of Prime Minister Werner Münch state government of Saxony -Anhalt. After his resignation, he was from 1993 to 1994 Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in the Cabinet chaired by Christoph Bergner. After the black-yellow coalition lost its majority in the state parliament election in 1994, Bohemian retired from the state government.

After the tolerated by the PDS SPD government of Reinhard Hoeppner was voted in the regional elections in 2002, Bohemian formed a black-yellow coalition and was elected on 16 May 2002 as prime minister of Saxony- Anhalt.

From 1 November 2002 to 31 October 2003, he was also President of the Bundesrat as scheduled.

In the regional elections of 2006, the CDU was able to maintain its position as the largest party under his leadership with 36.2 % of votes. Due to heavy losses of the FDP, the CDU, however, was dependent on a new government partners and formed a coalition with the SPD in Saxony-Anhalt. The new Parliament met on April 24, 2006 together for the first time and chose this Bohemian again as prime minister. In October 2010 he took over the chairmanship of the Prime Ministers' Conference from its Rhineland-Palatinate Kurt Beck counterparts.

At the 2011 state election, he joined with age not more. Economy Minister Reiner Haseloff was nominated by the CDU top candidate and candidate for the premiership. With nine years of rule Bohemian is so far the longest serving Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt.

He was also a board member of the 1993-2002 Leucorea Foundation, 1994-2000 Member of the Board of the Social Service Agency of the Protestant Church of the Church Province of Saxony, 1994-2001 Board member of the Paul -Gerhardt Foundation in Wittenberg, 1997-2002 Board of Trustees of the Foundation Luther in Sachsen -Anhalt and is still a member of the Social chamber of the Evangelical Church in Germany and member of the Presidium of the Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics eV

Criticism

Böhmer said in an interview with Focus in February 2008, that child killings in the GDR and today in the new federal states " for some a means of family planning." For this setting, " primarily " a " frivolous attitude to developing life " in the new Länder was responsible. This met with bipartisan criticism. On 28 February 2008, the Bohemian apologized before the parliament of Saxony -Anhalt for his comments and stated that such a " flat-rate statement ... was not justified ."
