Wołów

Wolów [ vɔwuf ] ( German Wohlau ) is a city in Poland and is part of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Wolów is the seat of powiat Wołowski and has about 12,300 inhabitants.

Geography

The city is located north of the Oder in the west part of the Cat Mountains, 46 km north- west of Breslau, on the railway line from Wroclaw to Berlin via Rzepin.

History

Already in 1285 seems to have had the status of a city Wohlau. In 1329 it coincided with the Duchy Oels as a fief to the crown of Bohemia. From 1413 it was the seat of the Duchy Wohlau. The city's name is derived from the Polish word for bull or cow; actually the oldest surviving city seal already shows 1473 a bull, which is still to be found in the city arms today. 1526 came Wohlau with Bohemia to the Habsburgs, but remained until 1675 a residence of the Silesian Piast of Liegnitz - Brieg - Wohlau. After the First Silesian War it fell with almost all of Silesia to Prussia. The city suffered severe damage in 1945, but was rebuilt after the war and expanded.
