Xavier-Marie Baronnet

Xavier -Marie Baronnet SJ ( born April 5, 1927 in Chantenay -sur -Loire, Loire -Atlantique, France, † September 8, 2012 in Paris) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Port Victoria o Seychelles.

Life

Xavier -Marie Baronnet, who was baptized on 1 May 1927 grew in Pontivy in the Morbihan department in Brittany. After his military service, he entered on October 16, 1950 in Laval, the Congregation of the Jesuits, where he completed his novitiate from 1950 to 1952 and receives the spiritual education of the Jesuits. From 1953 to 1956 he studied philosophy in Chantilly, and completed a teaching internship at the Ecole Ste Geneviève. After studying Catholic theology from 1957 to 1961, he received on September 7, 1960, the ordination.

At the Sorbonne in Paris, he studied sociology and African participated in 1962 in the establishment and activities of the INADES ( Institut Africain pour le Développement Economique et Social), a non- profit organization for development projects in Africa, based in Ivory Coast. After further extensive Jesuit training, he left Africa in 1966 and went to French Polynesia, where he supported the work of the Archbishops of Tahiti (Paul -Laurent -Jean -Louis Mazé SS.CC and from 1973 Michel - Gaspard Coppenrath ). From 1976 Baronnet worked in Réunion. In 1980 he was involved in the founding of the CEDOI ( Conférence Episcopale d' Océan Indien ) in Réunion.

In 1987 he was appointed Generalalmosenier the Scouts de France and there formed leaders and pastors from. From 1993 to 1993 he was secretary of the Catholic Conference of the islands of Mauritius, Reunion and Seychelles. In 1994 he was appointed superior of the Jesuits, who worked in the Indian Ocean region.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 3 March 1995 as Bishop of Port Victoria o Seychelles. The episcopal ordination donates him the Bishop of Saint- Denis- de -La Réunion, Gilbert Guillaume Marie -Jean Aubry, on 25 June 1995, Co-consecrators were Maurice Piat CSSp, Bishop of Port- Louis, and Jean- Samuel Raobelina MS, Bishop of Tsiroanomandidy.

For its manifold services it Denis Wiehe CSSp was provided as coadjutor to the side on 14 May 2001. After John Paul II had accepted his pre- attached for reasons of age resignation on 1 June 2002, Baronnet returned back to his native France and spent his retirement in Paris.

Work

Xavier -Marie Baronnet initiated the renovation of the Cathedral de l' Immaculée Conception, later, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette ( Chapel Cap Ternay ), the Convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny in Roche Caiman ( Sœurs de Saint- Joseph de Cluny ), the Church of St. Joseph on Praslin and more. During his episcopate, several new groups, movements, and services have been developed as PODAS ( Parents of disabled Persons Association), an association of parents of persons with disabilities, and the Association des parents des enfants handicapés, an association of parents of disabled children. In addition, he initiated the clubs to family support, APSHF ( Association for the Promotion of Solid Humane Families ) and Association pour la promotion des familles et humaines solid as well as an association for the Christian sailors of Seychelles Le Syndicat Chrétien Fisher'castle Seychellois.

Bishop Baronnet was involved in the training and gave the translation of the New Testament in Creole language in order. With the Ministry of National Education of the Seychelles, he negotiated an agreement for the establishment of Catholic schools for the period of 99 years and for a symbolic amount of one rupee (Rs. 1.00) per year.

Baronnet founded the La Mission Catholique Romaine aux Seychelles, from the L' Eglise Catholique Romaine aux Seychelles ( The Roman Catholic Church in the Seychelles ) emerged.

In 1998, he supported the merger of the two religious congregations of the Congregation of sœurs de Sainte Elizabeth and the Sœurs des Filles de Marie.

For his work he was appointed on 18 February 1998 by President Jacques Chirac a Knight of the Legion of Honour and of François Hollande 13 July 2012 Officer of the Legion of Honour.
