Yanick Dupré

Yanick Dupré ( born November 20, 1972 in Montreal, Quebec; † August 16, 1997 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey forward who played between 1994 and 1996 for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League.

Career

Yanick Dupre began his career in 1989 in the Canadian Junior Football League Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Drummondville Voltigeurs. There he presented himself as a good left winger and after he stood with the Voltigeurs in the final round at the Memorial Cup, he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL Entry Draft in 1991 in the third round at position 50. During the 1991/92 season he moved within the QMJHL with the Verdun Collège Français. When the QMJHL season was over, he still came in the current NHL season to use one for Philadelphia.

He spent the following two years in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears, the farm team of the Flyers. There he showed solid performance and was eventually appointed to the 1994/95 season for 22 games in the NHL squad, but neither was able to achieve a goal, even recorded an assist for themselves.

1995/96 he then had his best season, scoring one of the strongest scorer of the Hershey Bears AHL 56 points in 52 games. In addition, he was able to achieve in twelve NHL games with the Flyers scored two goals.

Towards the end of the season Dupré fell in March 1996 in a three-week coma and during the following tests was diagnosed with leukemia him. Weakened by the coma he could barely move at first, but over time the stabilized again. He underwent chemotherapy and in the autumn he told the doctors that the cancer had disappeared from his body. Dupré began training again. He also was involved in leukemia foundations, in which he collected money and by his teammates auctioned signed jerseys and hockey sticks and informed the public about blood cancer and bone marrow donations.

In May 1997, was found in a study that the cancer had returned in Dupré's body and this time in a more acute form. Dupré was dependent on bone marrow donation, which he received in June. In August, he once again fell into a coma and died on 16 August 1997 at the age of 24 years.

The AHL created in memory of Yanick Dupré Yanick Dupre Memorial Award to, which is awarded every year since 1998 to the player who has distinguished themselves by special engagement in society. The Philadelphia Flyers named to the Class Guy Award, with which the player was awarded within the team who used the best relationship with the media in order to Yanick Dupre Memorial Class Guy Award, will be honored with the 1999 Player of the Flyers, the character, dignity and respect, and best demonstrated off the ice.
