Yass, New South Wales

Yass is the county seat of Yass Shire in New South Wales in Australia. It has about 5,500 inhabitants. Yass is the largest city and county seat of Yass Valley Council administrative area.

Location

Yass is located in the southeast of New South Wales at the Yass River, about 70 kilometers north of Canberra on Barton Highway, 300 kilometers from Sydney and 750 kilometers from Melbourne on the Hume Highway.

History

1821 Hamilton Hume discovered the first European -born Australians the level of Yass, describing them as good land for sheep farming. Before that, the area was almost completely inhabited by Aborigines. Starting from 1835 a small settlement developed on the south bank of the Yass River. The name of the place, Yass, is interpreted as a derivation of the Aboriginal word " Yhar " which means " flowing water". The Merino breed is still the largest agricultural branch in Yass and the surrounding places. Between 1901 and 1911, Yass was talking instead Canberra to be the capital of Australia.

Sports

There are in Yass four major sports teams. Yass Rams Rugby Union Club, the Yass Magpies Rugby League, Yass Roos AFL and cricket team. Football is popular as a summer competition, as well as Touch Footy, a variant of the Australian Football and Netball. Since 1903 there is the Yass Golf Club with an 18 -hole course (par 68 ).
