Yumilka Ruíz

Yumilka Ruiz Luaces ( born May 8, 1978 in Camagüey ) is a Cuban former volleyball player.

Ruiz won with the Cuban national volleyball team in 1996 and 2000, two times in a row, the gold medal at the Olympic Games. She also won bronze in 2004 and in 2008 was fourth. She won gold at the 1998 World Championships, the World Cup 1999 and the Grand Prix 2000. Moreover, they received individual honors as the best striker and most valuable player in several international competitions ( MVP).

Ruiz is 1,79 m tall and played on the outside position. With its small size and enormous jumping ability ( tee height 3.29 m) her style was reminiscent of the legendary Mireya Luis and was regarded as its successor. Ruiz played for a time in Italy, but mainly in Cuba and most recently in 2007 /08 in Russia. The same year she finished her career with 30 years. Since then she has worked in the 20-member Aktivenrat the International Olympic Committee.
