Zachris Topelius

Zacharias Topelius [ sakari ː as tɔpe ː lɪʊs ] (also Zachris Topelius or Z. Topelius, born January 14, 1818 Kuddnäs Gård in Nykarleby, † March 12, 1898 in Björkudden, Sibbo ) was a Finland Swedish writer, poet, journalist, historian, and rector of the University Helsinki.

Life

Topelius was after he had taken private lessons with Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a student in Helsinki, received his doctorate in 1840 and edited from 1842 to 1860 the Helsingfors Tidningar, where he published his first poems and short stories. He also wrote the libretto for the first Finnish opera Kung Karls Jakt (1852 ) by Fredrik Pacius.

In 1852 he was a lecturer in history at the high school in Wasa, 1854, associate professor of Finnish history at the University of Helsinki, 1863 Professor, 1876 Professor of the general history, he resigned from the position in 1878 with the title of State.

Zacharias is his baptismal name, and this and the abbreviation Z. were often used as the author's name on his works. He himself, however, used mostly (even on formal occasions ) the abbreviation or the shape Zachris .. also the form Sakari Especially once used in texts about Topelius in Finnish.

In Berlin -Kladow the Topeliusweg in 1958 named after him.
