History

The original network

Zaragoza possessed since 1885 on a horse-drawn tram. The first electric tram line was opened in 1902, when there were already five main lines and a branch line in the city. The network, which grew rapidly, had a radial structure with the center of the Plaza de la Constitución (now Plaza de España). His greatest extent reached the tram network in the 1950s, while it began to shrink in the 1960s, when the first bus routes were opened. At the time of the maximum size wrong in Zaragoza 17 lines.

Gradually, the traffic and the bus opposite the cable car gained more and more importance and replaced it eventually. The last tram ran on 23 January 1976, when the last line ↔ Parque San Jose was shut down. The transport undertaking Los Tranvías de Zaragoza simultaneously changed the name to transport Urbano de Zaragoza ( TUZSA ).

The new project

The municipality of Zaragoza led during the 2000s the development of a plan de movilidad sostenible ( plan for sustainable mobility) of the city of Zaragoza included ( Intermodal Transport Plan of the Zaragoza region ) a plan, transportation intermodal de del área de. This plan, conceived as a technical study, was the company Equipo de Técnicos de Transporte y Territorio SA developed and its beneficiaries were equally the municipality of Zaragoza and the Government of Aragon. He had the objective to solve the traffic problems of the city and its surrounding area. The road was namely to its limits.

The plan was launched in September 2006. The most important changes are the construction of a tram line and a tram or light rail. In addition, changes were provided in the bus network, to make it more efficient and to link them to the new rail routes, and the plan was the construction of bus lanes. As envisaged in the plan consisted of a streetcar line in 2010 and its expansion in 2015.

The first phase of the project streetcar was awarded to the consortium Ingerop, Ayesa and Sering. The project was presented on 18 January 2008 and approved by the City Council on November 4, 2008. At that time the building was already decided, because he was already adopted on 25 July 2008 with the support of the parties PSOE, IU, CHA and PAR by the Council.

Funding was approved on 14 January 2009, the circumference is 400 million euros, of which 130 million euros will be applied by the Government of Aragon and the municipality of Zaragoza. There was a public tender for the construction of the first streetcar line, which was attended by two consortia (each led by CAF and Alstom ), and a third expressed interest ( led by Iridium, part of the group Actividades de Construcción y Servicios (ACS ) ). Finally, the contract was awarded on 10 July 2009 to the consortium from CAF ( 25%), TUZSA (25 %), FCC ( 16.6%), Acciona ( 16.6%), IBERCAJA (11.8%) and Concessia (5%), TRAZA mentioned. The construction began on 19 August 2009.

The test operation without passengers in the first phase of construction began on November 1, 2010 On February 18, 2011, the trial run began. Empty runs, the simulated normal operating day; from April 4, began trial operation with passengers, the walk-ins with free tickets for each meeting. On April 19, the official opening took place.

Future extensions and new lines

The construction of the tram network will continue with the second stage of the existing line and the construction of new lines. Work on the second phase of Line 1 began on 3 March 2011 and should be completed around 2013. The two other planned lines are planned for 2015.

  • Line 2: Las Fuentes / San Jose ↔ Delicias
  • Line 3: La Jota ↔ torrero

Line 1 ( Valdespartera ↔ Parque Goya )

The first planned line follows a north -south axis of Valdespartera through downtown to Parque Goya. It includes 25 stations (22 of them with side platforms and three with the middle platform ) at a distance of about 500 meters. The total length of this route is 12.8 km, which are traveled at an average cruising speed of 21 kilometers per hour. The travel time for the total distance is 40 minutes ( 19 minutes for the section Academia General Militar ↔ Plaza de España and 21 minutes between Plaza de España and the Plaza Cinema Paradiso in Valdespartera ).

The construction of this line was divided into two phases:

The estimated investment volume amounts to 400 million euros:

The expected number of users have been estimated at 100 000 passengers per day, the expected fare revenue to 0.75 euros per passenger.

Line 2 ( Las Fuentes / San Jose ↔ Delicias )

The second tram line runs east - west direction. You will connect the district of Las Fuentes and San José (with two branches ) with Las Decias.

The tender for the construction work is going to be completed in May 2014. The work is expected to begin in late 2016 and take two years.

The second line would start in Les Enlaces and the Avenida de Madrid along drive to the Plaza de la Ciudadanía, with stops also at Calle Rioja and the Paseo de Calanda. Then she would run for up to El Portillo where she had another stop. The other line path would the Conde de Chamarande follow up to the next stop on César Augusto, where a connection to the first streetcar line would. Then they verliefe along the entire Coso to Plaza San Miguel, with stops along the Plaza de España and the Coso.

Skip the line after Servetus would extend to the Compromisos de Caspe. At this point they would branch into two line branches, one to Las Fuentes and to San Jose. The first branch would have stops on Jorge Cocci, Doctor Iranzo and San Adrian of Sasabe, where the line would end.

The road to San José, however, is not yet definitely established. A possible variation would result from the S -Bahn station at the Miraflores Ronda Hispanidad on Calle Miguel Servet, with stops at Calle Numancia and place Utrillas. The alternative variant would lead along the Avenida de Sant Jose to Miraflores, the connection to the S -Bahn would be via a new station on tenor Fleta.

The total length of the second route cheating seven kilometers with 15 stops.

The cost of building the line 2 are estimated at 130 million euros.

Line 3 ( La Jota ↔ torrero )

The third tram line in Zaragoza is to run in a north-south direction and also the downtown crossing. You would connect the district with Jota torrero, where the urban Frie.dhof is, being not yet decided whether they want to end there or at the Z -30 ( third ring road of Zaragoza )

Little is known about the exact lines, because the plans are focused at the time on the first and second line.

Rolling stock

The consortium, construction and operation has taken the tram, chose as rolling the model Urbos 3 of the Spanish rail manufacturer CAF. The articulated railcars have a total length of 33 meters and consist of five modules (expandable to two modules on 43 meters). They are 2.65 meters wide and 3.2 meters high. Your capacity is 200 people, including 146 standing ( at 3.5 persons per square meter) and 54 seats.

Power supply without catenary

Proponents of the streetcar demanded that the presented project should not use catenary in the historic city center ( Plaza Paraíso and between Murallas ) so as not to impair the aesthetic impression. The two companies that participated in the tender, have systems that allow a streetcar traffic without catenary: APS in case of Alstom and Utracaps (ACR ) in the case of CAF.

The contract was awarded, the model Urbos 3 of CAF and the system used is acumulador de Carga Rápida, which in some ultracapacitors enough energy is saved to reach from a stop the next. Charged are the supercapacitors on the recuperation and through connections to the power supply at the bus stops.

At present, several attempts for driving done without overhead contact line on the existing line (phase 1).

Controversies

The tram is a project of the City Government of Zaragoza and supported by most political parties that formed the city government until the municipal elections of 2007. Proponents of the streetcar argue that the tram fast ( 21 km / h travel speed with traffic light priority circuit on the largest part of the route ), easily accessible ( on the surface and at the level of the sidewalk ), positive for the urban environment (reduction of road traffic and redesign of road space ) and is environmentally (less CO2 emissions than other means of transport ).

In the city blazed with various groups protests against the project, both with locals as well as the dealers. and tree protectors Opponents criticize the high cost of the project ( about 2000 euros per family ), the restriction of car traffic on a main axis (from two to three lanes in each direction to one in some areas ), the impact of roadworks on small businesses and other aspects tram ( no way to avoid obstacles, aesthetic impact of the overhead line on the cityscape ).
