Zvenigovo

Swenigowo (Russian Звенигово, mari Провой, Prowoj ) is a city in the Republic of Mari El in Russia with 11,946 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Location

The city is located about 650 km east of Moscow and 90 km south of the capital of Republic of Yoshkar -Ola, on the left bank of the River Volga in the region of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. The nearest town is Wolschsk; this is a good 20 line kilometers of Swenigowo.

History

The village was founded in 1860 as Volga settlement with a boat dock and a shipyard. The place was particularly suitable for the parking of boats over the winter, as it at the mouth of the little river Sweniga was a small bay here ( from the Swenigowo also takes its name ). At first counted the hamlet a few barracks for the workers of the dock. However, until the end of the 19th century, the shipyard has developed into a larger operation, attracted the workers from abroad. Beginning of the 20th century was already Swenigowo as an industrial center.

In the 1920s and 1930s was Swenigowo by a local government reform and the formation of the same name Rajons whose center it was further industrialized; among other things, the shipyard was expanded and built new infrastructure objects. The city status was given Swenigowo 1974.

Economy and Transport

Swenigowo has a shipping pier at Kuibyshev reservoir. The industry is here with the shipyard, founded in 1860 ( today: Butjakow shipyard Swenigowo ), also represented with wood and food industries.
