2014 FIFA World Cup qualification (CAF)

The associations of the African Football Confederation (CAF ) played five positions for the World Cup 2014. The first qualifying round began on November 11, 2011.

For the qualification came forward to Mauritania on all the associations of CAF who are also a member of the world governing body FIFA. The draw of the games of the 52 African teams was held in Rio de Janeiro on 30 July 2011. Before the start of the first round and Mauritius withdrew, so 51 teams started the qualification. Except for South Africa to host the World Cup 2010, could ultimately qualify all African teams, who were also there in 2010.

Rules

According to FIFA regulations the preliminaries in the form of group matches and cup matches may be played in each round-trip games or in exceptional cases a tournament in one of the countries involved. In the group matches, three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. It decided the following criteria:

Cut two teams according to these criteria the same as, a play can be set.

In the cup matches counts Torgleichheit after the two games, the higher number of away goals scored. If the number of away goals equal, extra time is played. If no goal in extra time, the match will be decided on penalties. Traps in extension same number of goals, the away team qualified by more away goals scored.

Mode

The 24 lowest-ranked teams played in two playoff games between the 11 and 15 November 2011 at 12 places in the second qualifying round. This took place with all the other 40 teams between 1 June 2012 and 10 September 2013. They played in 10 groups of four by 10 grid positions in the third qualifying round. The best group in each moved into the third qualifying round. The five playoff games at the finals places then found a home-and -away basis between 11 and 15 October 2013, and the 15th - 19th November 2013 instead.

First round

The 24 lowest-ranked teams played in two playoff games between the 11 and 16 November 2011 at 12 places in the second qualifying round.

Note: On 31 October 2011, FIFA announced the withdrawal of Mauritius, Liberia which automatically moved to the next round.

Group stage

The twelve winners of the first round as well as the 28 teams that did not have to play these were divided for the second round in ten groups of four, where a league system with home and away matches was played. The draw was part of the main qualifying draw on July 30, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro. The winners qualified for the playoffs.

Playoffs

In the playoffs, the winner of each group occurred in two play-off games against each other, in the period from October 11 to 15 (round ) and from 15 to 19 November 2013 ( return legs ). The five winners qualified for the World Cup 2014. The draw was held in Cairo on 16 September 2013. The five best teams in the FIFA world rankings from September 12, 2013 were placed in Pot 1.

Of the ten qualified play-off participants up to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso were all already represented at the World Cup finals.
