History

The U -21 Austria has indeed participated in all UEFA European Championships, with one exception (1980 ), yet could never qualify for a final round.

In qualifying for the European Championship 2006 Austria was dissolved with Germany, England, Poland, Wales and Azerbaijan in Group 6. Three wins were against two draws and five defeats, with a goal difference of 9:14. With only eleven points was the second place, which would have been enough for the play-offs, unattainable. Against the neighbors and later group winners from Germany, the Austrians lost both games. A moderate success, it was against the team from England, which was defeated on 7 October 2005, 2-1. It was the only away win in Austria.

Since, according to the 2006 European Championships in 2007, the next European Championship, and as usual should not take place every two years, this qualification has been played in the quick method. Starting with a preliminary round, over a short group stage with three teams and play- off matches. Austria needed only to go into the group stage. In the group of five, they were drawn against Italy and Iceland. It was only played one game against each team, so the team away and even had home advantage once each. In the first game on 16 August 2006, the two -level outsider Austria and Iceland by a 0-0 draw against each other, the points away. After defeating Italy 1-0 on Matchday Iceland, the last game against the Austrians had to decide. Italy sat down again 1-0, so the Austrians missed the qualification.

When qualifying for Euro 2009, the Austrians had luck of the draw and could, with the exception of Italy dodge the big favorites in Group 7. With Belgium, Slovakia, Iceland and Cyprus, the team was faced with a difficult but solvable problem. After only the first course for the play- off round legitimate, was this goal of the Austrians. With six wins and two draws, the first rank was clearly earned. Belgium was clearly referenced with nine points on the second place. All home games were won and point losses were only available in the away games against Iceland and Slovakia. In any game, the team won more than one goal difference. This was the first qualifying for the playoffs for a place in the play-off round in the history of the Austrian U-21 team ..

In the play-offs for a place in the play-off round of the 2009 European Championships on 11 and 15 October 2008 Austria met to Finland and thus stood in front of a releasable task. In the first game in Traun conducted two early goals by Christoph Saurer and Florian Klein after just 13 minutes - Perparim Hetemaj could shorten in the 63rd minute for the Finns - a 2-1 victory, where the Austrians left out many good ways .. In leg also seemed everything was going to go well. Marko Stanković scored the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. This should last for up to 81 minutes before Jussi Vasara scored the equalizer. In injury time Vasara met with his second goal to make it 2-1 for Finland and Austria forced into overtime. When this did not yield any decision, it came to the penalty shootout. In this failed Stanković and Madl at the Finnish keeper Tomi Maanoja, which the Austrian team missed the first part in a U-21 European Championship finals.

Also in Group 10 for the European Championship 2011, the replacement weakened Austria started with a 1-2 defeat in Belarus.
