Chishima Province

The Chishima Province (Japanese千岛 国, Chishima no kuni ) was an old province of Japan and originated in the Meiji period. Originally it consisted of the Kuril Islands of Kunashiri northward, later was added Shikotan. Its original area is currently occupied by Russia, the later area was ceded by the Treaty of San Francisco - see Kurilenkonflikt.

History

Together with the provinces on the province of Hokkaido on August 15, 1869, created with five counties ( gun), at the 1872 census, 437 (Japanese ) citizens are counted. In November 1875, the Karafuto ( Sakhalin) Prefecture will be transferred in exchange for the Kuril Islands in Russia (Treaty of Saint Petersburg. These Kuril Islands were divided into three new counties. In January 1885, the island Shikotan comes from the province of Nemuro as a county added.

  • Kunashiri -gun (国 后 郡): controversial, occupied and administered by Russia from the perspective of Japan, see Kurilenkonflikt
  • Etorofu -gun (択 捉 郡): controversial, occupied from the perspective of Japan and administered by Russia
  • Furebetsu -gun (振 别 郡): dissolved April 1923 were merged as his congregations with several municipalities in the counties Shana and Etorofu to the municipality Rubetsu in Etorofu
  • Shana -gun (纱 那 郡): controversial, occupied and administered by Russia from the perspective of Japan
  • Shibetoro -gun (蕊 取 郡): controversial, occupied and managed from the perspective of Japan from Russia
  • Shikotan -gun (色 丹 郡): 1885 separated from Hanasaki -gun, currently occupied by Russia from the perspective of Japan and managed.
  • Uruppu -gun (得 抚 郡): acquired by the Treaty of St. Petersburg, again ceded in the Treaty of San Francisco.
  • Shimushiro -gun (新知 郡): acquired by the Treaty of St. Petersburg, again ceded in the Treaty of San Francisco.
  • Shumushu -gun (占 守 郡): acquired by the Treaty of St. Petersburg, again ceded in the Treaty of San Francisco.
