Rocca al Mare is one of the twelve districts (Estonian asum ) of the Tallinn district Haabersti. It is located seven kilometers west of the center of the Estonian capital.

Description and History

Rocca al Mare is located on the Bay of Kopli ( Kopli Laht ). The district has only one of the Tallinn city districts no permanent residents inhabitants (as of 1 May 2010 ).

The history of Rocca al Mares began in 1863, when the German Baltic Tallinn Mayor Baron Arthur de Soucanton Girard ( 1813-1884 ) had built a summer home in 1863. The Italy friend named the estate after a date prior to the Baltic coast rocks Rocca al Mare. To his summer villa there he had to create a large park.

Estonian Open Air Museum

As of May 1957, the Tallinn City Government in Rocca al Mare left a big open-air museum of Estonian country culture to create. 1964, the Estonian Open Air Museum ( Eesti Estonian Open Air Museum ) was officially opened. Today it has an area of ​​84 hectares. The open air museum showcasing old Estonian manors, farmhouses, fishing accommodation and windmills from all regions of Estonia. The 79 buildings show rural life and the Estonian culture country from 1750 to the early 20th century with numerous equipment and inventory.

The museum is divided into four parts: West Estonia ( Lääne- Eesti ), North Estonia ( Eesti Põhja - ), the Estonian islands ( saared ) and Southern Estonia ( Eesti Lõuna - ). The main attractions are the court of Sassi -Jaani with the typical Estonian squad Apartment ( rehielamu ) of 1766/67, several historic windmills, the Fisherman of Aarte from the late 19th century and the tavern of Kõlu ( Kõlu Kõrts, 1842-46 ).

Among many other original preserved houses and some exhibition rooms, a wooden chapel from the westestnischen Sutlepa ( Sutlepa cable), a school ( Kuie koolimaja, 1887), Estonian traditional country swings ( kiigud ), smoke saunas, and a firehouse ( pritsikuur, 1928) are exhibited.

In the summer there are regular guided tours and events held at the museum.
