German motorcycle Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Germany for Motorcycles is a motorcycle race that has been held since 1925 and belongs to the motorcycle world championship since 1952. It takes place at the Sachsenring near Hohenstein- Ernstthal since 1998.

History

The first Grand Prix of Germany took place in 1925 at the Berlin AVUS instead. After that, he was regularly discharged until 1939, first on the AVUS, then at the Nurburgring and later at the Sachsenring. In the years 1927 and 1936 he served as European Grand Prix the FICM advertised; the winners in each class won the European championship at the same time, because until 1937, the European champion was determined in only one race each in the context of a national motorcycle Grand Prix. Also in 1938 and 1939 belonged to the Grand Prix of Germany to the European Championships, which now consisted of several Grands Prix in which EM points were awarded.

Since 1951 is the Grand Prix, after the resumption of Germany in the FIM, held annually and often changed in the two-year rhythm of the venue. In the 1950s and 1960s, southern Germany was represented with the Stuttgart Solitude motorcycle racing and the Hockenheimring often, this came in 1953 once around Scots on the bulkhead ring. At the Nürburgring, the shorter and less risky Südschleife was often driven rather than the more familiar Nordschleife. After 1970/71, only the Nürburgring - Nordschleife was reconstructed, alternated to 1980 Hockenheim and Nürburgring on an annual basis from.

In 1974 it came to boycott the race at the Nürburgring by all foreign drivers because of safety deficiencies. The background was that the Grand Prix was held along with the Eifel race for automobiles and therefore no straw bales to secure the route could be used for fire protection reasons, although these were common for motorcycle racing at that time. The races were then won by German drivers who could probably have a chance under normal ( dry ) conditions. The victory of Edmund Czihak in the 500 cc class represents today the only victory of a German pilot in the premier class dar.

1984 was the first race held at the newly built Grand Prix circuit of the Nürburgring. In the 1990s, the number of spectators attended, not least due to the organizers policy sharply, after which it was decided to change to the newly constructed route of the traditional Sachsenring. Since 1998, the Sachsenring reported annual new attendance records, with over 230,000 spectators during the race weekend in 2011 is one of the Grand Prix of Germany now one of the most visited motorcycle World Championship races.
