James P. Geelan

James Patrick Geelan ( born August 11, 1901 in New Haven, Connecticut; † August 10, 1982 ) was an American politician. Between 1945 and 1947 he represented the third electoral district of the state of Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

James Geelan attended the public schools of his home and thereafter until 1922, the St. Anthony 's College in San Antonio ( Texas). Between 1922 and 1941 he worked in the cigar business. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the years 1939, 1941 and 1943, he was elected to the Senate from Connecticut; 1941 to 1943 he was employed in the management of the municipal court of New Haven. In 1942 Geelan also served as Vice President of the Working Committee of New Haven ( Central Labor Council). Since 1943 he worked in the insurance industry.

In the congressional elections of 1944 Geelan in the third district of Connecticut was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he came into effect on January 3, 1945 is the successor of the Republican Ranulf Compton, whom he had defeated in the election. As he his hand to the Republicans Ellsworth Foote defeated in the elections of 1946, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1947.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Geelan resumed his previous career again. In 1972, he withdrew into retirement. James Geelan died on 10 August 1982, on the eve of his 81st birthday, in New Haven.
