Jämsä

Jämsä [ JÄMSÄ ] is a city in central Finland with 22 372 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Jämsä located in the Southwestern landscape of Central Finland on the border of the river Pirkanmaa Jämsänjoki west of Lake Päijänne. Jyväskylä, Central Finland is the capital, 58 kilometers north-east, 92 km south-west of Tampere.

History

The parish Jämsä has existed since the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in 1442. The old parish was in area much larger than today's Jämsä and is therefore also referred to as wholesale Jämsä.
