Jan Egil Storholt

January Egil Storholt ( born February 13, 1949 in Meldal ) is a former Norwegian speed skater.

Career

Storholt was considered one of the greatest talents of Norwegian speed skater until 1970 he was seriously injured in an accident in a mine. In 1972 he had re-established in the national forefront. After some of Norway's best runners were changed in 1973 in the professional camp and therefore no longer allowed to participate in the Olympic Games, became Storholt one of the best Norwegian amateurs.

His greatest sporting achievements was winning the gold medal in the 1,500 m at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1976. 1977 and 1979 he was European champion in four-way battle. From 1977 to 1979 he was vice-champion in each four- fight and was beaten only the then outstanding athletes Eric Heiden. On 20 March 1977 he exhibited at the mountain railway medeo in Alma -Ata ( USSR, now Kazakhstan) over 1,500 m, and in the four-way battle the only world records in his career.

In 1980 he was flag-bearer of the Norwegian team at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Lake Placid. However, the benefit of another Olympic medal was denied him. His last great sporting success was a third place in the four-way battle at the Speed ​​Skating World Championships 1981 in Oslo.
