John Dennis (1807–1859)

John Dennis (* 1807 in Princess Anne, Somerset County, Maryland; † November 1, 1859 ) was an American politician. Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Dennis was the son of the Congressman John Dennis (1771-1806) and a cousin of Littleton Purnell Dennis (1786-1834), who was also a congressman. He attended the common schools. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In addition, he worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career and was the Whig Member of the Lower House of Maryland.

In the congressional elections of 1836 Dennis was the first electoral district of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John Nevett Steele on March 4, 1837. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1841 two legislative sessions. In 1850 he was a delegate at a meeting on the revision of the Constitution of Maryland. He died on November 1, 1959 the estate Beckford near Princess Anne.
