John H. Hoffecker

John Henry Hoffecker (* September 12, 1827 in Smyrna, Kent County, Delaware, † June 16, 1900 in Smyrna ) was an American politician. Between 1899 and 1900 he represented the State of Delaware in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Hoffecker attended both public and private schools and was later trained as an engineer. In this profession he worked in Smyrna. Later he became president of the Philadelphia & Smyrna Transportation Co. In this office should later succeed him his son Walter.

Politically, he was originally a member of the Whig party. According to their resolution mid-1850s he moved to the then newly formed Republican Party. In the years 1876 and 1884 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. In 1888 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Delaware. From 1878 to 1898 he was Chairman of the City Council of Smyrna. In 1896, he applied as a candidate Parteiabsplitterung and the Prohibition Party unsuccessfully for the office of the Governor of Delaware. Already in 1886, was a first attempt to be elected governor, failed.

1898 Hoffecker was elected with 54% of the vote against the Democratic incumbent L. Irving Handy in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he met on March 4, 1899 to his new mandate. In 1900 he visited the Federal Republican convention in Philadelphia. From there he traveled to a furlough to Smyrna, where he suffered a fatal stroke on June 16, 1900. John Hoffecker was married twice. His son Walter was elected in the by-election due to succeed his father in Congress.
