Kelmiküla

Kelmiküla ( German for " rogue village" ) is a district (Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn. It is located in Põhja -Tallinn District ( "North -Tallinn ").

Description and History

The municipality has 911 inhabitants ( as of 2008).

Past two - to three-storey wooden houses with a central staircase of stone interspersed with modern buildings that have arisen after regaining of Estonian independence.

In Kelmiküla is partly Tallinn's main railway station, the " Baltic Station " ( Balti jaam ). The original station building was built at this location in 1870. According to its demolition in 1962 the waiting room and in 1970 the main building of today's railway station was completed, with its clear geometric shapes by Leningrad architects after two years of construction.

The station is located in the street Toompuiestee. Its historical German name is Dompromenade. The street was renamed in 1961 in Yuri Gagarin Avenue ( Juri Gagarini puiestee ). Today she wears her previous name.
