Montgomery County (Georgia)

The Montgomery County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mount Vernon.

Geography

The County is located in east-central Georgia and has an area of 641 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Toombs County, Jeff Davis County, Wheeler County, Treutlen County and Emanuel County.

History

Montgomery County was formed on December 19, 1823 18 County of Georgia from parts of Washington County. It was named after Richard Montgomery, a general during the Revolutionary War, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Quebec.

For parts of this County the following counties were later formed: Wheeler County, Tattnall County, Toombs County, Emanuel County, Treutlen County and Dodge County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 8,270 people in Montgomery County. 25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 12.8 percent between 18 to 24, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 105.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,240, and the median income for a family $ 38,418. Males have a median income of $ 27,572, women $ 21,342. The per capita income was $ 14,182. 15.8 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
