Turner County (Georgia)
The Turner County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ashburn.
Geography
The County is located in south-central Georgia, is removed from the northern border of Florida about 120 miles and has an area of 751 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Wilcox County, Ben Hill County, Irwin County, Tift County, Worth County and Crisp County.
History
Turner County was formed on 18 August 1905 as 143 County Georgia from portions of Dooly County, of Irwin County, the Wilcox County and Worth County. It was named after Henry Gray Turner, a captain in the Confederate and later a member of the U.S. Congress.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 9,504 people in Turner County. Of these, 161 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 3,435 households and 2,538 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 56.37 percent White, 40.98 percent Black or African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.81 percent from other races groups; 0.36 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.57 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,435 households out of which 35.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.0 percent were married couples living together, 18.6 percent were single mothers and 26.1 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent of all households and 10.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.
29.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.2 percent between 18 to 24, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males.
The median income for a household was $ 25,676, and the median income for a family $ 31,445. Males have a median income of $ 25,694, women $ 18,472. The per capita income was $ 13,454. 20.5 percent of families and 26.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
