Nigerien presidential election, 1965

The presidential elections in Niger in 1965 were carried out on September 30, 1965, were the first direct election of a president of the Republic of Niger since the country's independence in 1960, as Hamani Diori, the first president of the country, was in 1960 elected indirectly by the Nigerien National Assembly.

The 1965 elections were sham elections that were conducted under the conditions of a one-party state: The reigning since 1960 President Hamani Diori was the only candidate on the ballot, since no competitor had been admitted. Additionally the given turnout of 98.4 % seems implausible given the infrastructural conditions of the then Niger, and the non-existent choice.
