Nigerien presidential election, 1970

In the presidential elections in Niger, 1970, the President of the Republic of Niger was chosen by direct election. The elections were held on 1 October 1970. The only candidate and election winner was the incumbent Hamani Diori.

Background

In the First Republic (1960-1974), there was a one-party system of the Nigerien Progressive Party (PPN - RDA) under President Hamani Diori. This was recently confirmed in the presidential election of 1965 in office. Then, as in the now constitutionally scheduled presidential elections from 1970 Hamani Diori was the only candidate. The elections were neither free nor competitive.

Results

From 1,942,744 registered voters went to the polls officially 1910626. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 98.3%. Of the 1,907,673 ballots cast (99.8%) as valid and 2,953 (0.2%) were considered invalid.

Follow

On October 22, 1970 parliamentary elections were held. The term of office of President Hamani Diori ended prematurely by a coup d'état on 15 April 1974 at the Seyni Kountché came to power.
