Robert Hodgson (judge)

Sir Robert Hodgson (* 1798 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Iceland, † September 15, 1880 ) was a Canadian judge. From 1852 he was chairman of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Iceland, from 1874 to 1879, he served as vice governor of that province.

Hodgson studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1819. He opened an office in Charlottetown and was next employed as a realtor. His political career began in 1824 with the election to the Legislative Assembly. As of May 1828, he was a member of the Attorney General of the colonial government. A year later he was appointed to the Legislative Council, the upper house of the colony and presided this from 1840. Hodgson joined in 1851 by his political posts back. The administration of George Coles appointed him the following year as Chairman of the Supreme Court. Ex officio, he represented three times the governors in their absence. Governor General Lord Dufferin sworn Hodgson on July 4, 1874 as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Iceland. This representative office he held until July 10, 1879.
