San Diego County is a county located in the U.S. state of California. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is in San Diego.

Geography

The county covers an area of ​​11,721 km ². The County flows through the San Diego River. The southern end of the county already forms the border with Mexico.

History

The roots of the county dates back to the time in which the Mission San Diego de Alcalá was founded in 1769 there. San Diego County was one of the first counties in California. It was created in 1850 when the state was founded. Parts of the county were later given to the Riverside County in 1893 and to the Imperial County in 1907.

The Countyname comes from the San Diego Bay, a bay, the Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602, named after the Franciscan laity San Diego de Alcala de Henares, whose name was emblazoned on the flagship.
