Sustenpass

The Susten Pass on the main road 11 connects the canton of Uri and the Canton of Bern. The pass road is 45 km long and is one of the newer in the Swiss Alps. It was only built between 1938 and 1945. Because it serves the tourism in particular, it is usually open from June to October.

Location

The road begins in Wassen on the northern ramp of the Gotthard Pass and through the villages lying in Meiental Meien and Färnigen with a maximum of 9 percent slope. The pass is at 2,224 m passes under a summit tunnel. On the west ramp in the Bernese Oberland, the descent, also with 9 percent goes on Steingletscher passing through the towns of Gadmen and Nessental in Gadmertal.

In Innertkirchen ( end point of the Meiringen- Innertkirchen -Bahn ) to the streets from the Susten Pass and from the Grimsel Pass unite; to the Aare Gorge past Meiringen is achieved.

History

Archaeological finds, including the trunk of a stone pine and peat, indicate that the pass in prehistoric times was temporarily glacier -free.

The name is derived from Sust, which means as much as warehouse or department store. At least since the Middle Ages led a trading route over the Susten.

During the Villmerger wars in the years 1656 and 1712 as the Berne and Zurich on the one hand and the cantons of Waldstätte faced with train on the other hand, were Lieutenant Colonel L. Tillier with the " Hasli - army " preparations for the border security taken on the Susten Pass. Also on the page Uris larger fortifications were built. They were half way between Wassen and Meien; its ruins are still relatively well preserved ( Meienschanze ).

1810 decided the cantonal governments of Berne and Uri, expand the road over the Susten. On the Bernese side began in 1811 and completed the expansion about 1817 finished. For the construction of the Bernese government turned to high for that time amount of 210'279 old Swiss francs.

Before the Second World War, the Army called for strategic reasons, a better -developed connection. The new road passes next to the old road and was built by generous switchbacks into the slope. It was 1945, after 8 years of construction to traffic. Its construction had cost 32 million Swiss francs, which would amount to around CHF 160 million, compared to current prices.

The Susten Pass is one of several major Alpine passes which are traveled when cycling marathon Alpenbrevet.
